Pioneer AVIC-D2 GPS/AV System

If your current ride didn't come with a GPS navigation system, you have two choices — buy a dash/windshield-mount system or replace your factory unit with a more advanced in-dash system. The Pioneer AVIC-D2 ($1,500) is definitely advanced. The DVD-based navigation system features an easy-to-read 6.5-inch touch-screen LCD, turn-by-turn voice guidance, and a sleek and understated double-din design that blends in perfectly with nearly any car or truck interior. The AVIC-D2 is powered by a 15GB TeleAtlas navigation database on two DVD map discs covering the entire United States and Canada, and contain nearly 11 million points of interests. Once you select a destination — by either entering a destination by address, name or phone number, or by going through the built-in categories — the system provides turn-by-turn directions, estimated drive time, and voice prompts with close-ups of turns.

Because the AVIC-D2 has separate CD and DVD drives, you can listen to music while the navigator is in operation, a feature we put to good use over the weekend. The system also features MP3 CD support, an AM/FM radio, Supertuner IIID, EEQ, and MOSFET50 amplification. It's also XM NavTraffic ready if you need live traffic information, and optional accessories include a direct-connect iPod adapter and a rear-view camera to save your bumper. Overall, the Pioneer AVIC-D2 would make an outstanding flagship GPS/AV system for anybody's vehicle.
