Tell Uncrate: What's Your Favorite Beer?

Tell Uncrate: What's Your Favorite Beer?

We've got another easy question for our second Tell Uncrate open thread — what's your favorite brew. You can give your all-time favorite, a great one you've discovered recently, or both. Remember, try to find a link to the beer online and include it in your comment if it's not well known. If you're curious, the glass shown here is the classic Danish Beer Glass by Holmegaard ($30).

Harp,

Summit Pale Ale, easily my favorite. But I'm admittedly biased, being a Minnesota guy.

Mac & Jacks African Amber (only a NW beer though)

http://www.cascadebrewersguild.org/macnjack.asp

It's got to be Harp or Becks

Widmer's Drop Top Ale... Very good... Starts out like a pale ale, but ends sweet... I was in love at first sip
http://www.widmer.com/beer_droptop.aspx

Young's Oatmeal Stout.
Tasteeee!

Dogfish Head - they make an amazing number of great beers.

If I had to pick one, it would be the 120 Minute IPA It is HUGE!

http://www.dogish.com

Anchor Steam Beer.

Bar none the best beer I've ever had. Blows all those weak beers (corona, budweiser, fosters) away. And it's not bitter like all those microbrewed pale ale's (sierra neveda, pyramid, sam adams). I could go on and on about its pedigree and hand made quality but their website says it better.

http://www.anchorbrewing.com/

Anchor Steam my friends is good beer.

Dogfish Head - Aprihop or Chickory Stout...depends on the mood.

The entire St. Bernardus line is great, but the ABT 12 is my personal favorite.

http://www.sintbernardus.be/en/index.html

Flying Dog - They're all good, but the Pale Ale is my favorite.

http://www.flyingdogales.com/default.asp

On the lite side, bj's brewed - blonde beer. On the dark side, Hoppy's brewed - Total Eclipse black ale. It might be thicker then 10w-30. It is a little bitter, but damn does it hit the spot.

Boulevard Wheat is a great beer out of Kansas City!

Murauer from Austria

I've got a few:
Dogfish Head's 90 minute IPA
Anchor Steam's Liberty Ale
Flying Dog's Gonzo Imperial Porter

Personally, I'd say the 90 minute IPA takes it as my favorite.

Hands down, Grant's Manderin Hefenweizer is my alltime favorite beer, however since Grant died I haven't been able to find it. If you ever have the priviledge of drinking one, I highly recommend it.

Kilkenny's, which is sadly not available in the U.S.

Hornsby's hard apple cider is great, but hard to find now. i also like Yuengling. Sam Adams Summer Ale is pretty tasty on a hot summers day, slightly lemony.

hoegaarden

Shed Mountain Ale, because when it's winter in Vermont you should consider 8% ABV a minimum...

Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Obsidian Stout, both made by Deschutes Brewery - http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/

I'm a huge beer fan in general, but one of my favorites is Keoki Gold from Hawaii. It's a pale gold color and it's drinkability tips the scales, especially in the hot Maui sun. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find it back here on the mainland.

http://www.keokibrewing.com/ourbeers.html

Newport Storm Hurricane Amber Ale

http://www.newportstorm.com/index.asp

Now, I am biased as a Rhode Islander, but what a good everyday beer!

Spaten

Manny's, available only in the PNW, is the best beer I've had in years.

Steamwhistle or Guiness

For the Winter: Harpoon Winter Warmer
For the Summer: Red Stripe

Hooray Beer!!!

Steamwhistle, Stella Artois, Pumphouse Blueberry Ale (http://www.pumphousebrewery.ca/)

Back when I drank, it was a tie between Shiner Bock and 90 Schilling Ale.

Now, it's: Beck's NA.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
http://www.merchantduvin.com/pages/5_breweries/samsmith_oatmeal_stout.html

Most anything from Stone Brewing or Avery Brewing but Arrogant Bastard from Stone and Karma from Avery in particular.

Before you had to go get it directly from the monastery: Westvleteren

Nowadays been drinking a lot of Sam Smith's Old Pale Ale

Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale

It's the pride of Nova Scotia

I'd have to say Yuengling, followed by both Stella Artois and Boddington's.

I agree with tim (near the top)
Stella Artois rocks

Mack & Jack

Blackbeary Wheat (seasonal) by Long Trail Brewery, Vermont.
The best beer I have ever had. Only sold in the Northeast for limited summer months. If you ever get a chance to visit their brewery or just come across the beer - more than worth it.

Trappiste Rochefort 10 (bluc cap)
its about 11.5% alcohol has a chocolatey and smooth finish

http://www.merchantduvin.com/pages/5_breweries/rochefort_beers.html

The St. Bernadus Abt 12 is a close second.

New Belgium - Fat Tire

leffe blonde or weihenstefaner

i second hoegaarden, but my new love is new belgian brewery's skinny dip. it's a summer only brew with a crisp light taste and a hint of orange. YUM.

Dogfish Raison D'Etre and Russian River Brewing Co. Pliny the Elder

Rogue Dead Guy or Bells Two Hearted

Got to agree that Stella is good beer.

Personal fav is Sleeman's Cream Ale. Canada only though. :( Can't get it here down South.

My goodness My Guiness.

Chimay (Belgian). Jenlain (French) is great during the summer and as a bonus comes in a 750ml bottle with a cork. Sexy.

Definitely going to Total Wine today to pick up some of these suggestions... but i've got to go with Anchor Steam Liberty Ale. 2nd is probably Sierra Nevada. For cheap drinkin though, PBR me ASAP.

For something a bit lesser known (mostly because of its limited scope) is the Legend Lager or Legend Brown Ale. Legend Brewing is located in Richmond, VA.

http://www.legendbrewing.com/

Breckenridge "Trademark Pale Ale" Colorado
Magic Hat Brewing #9 Vermont
Pyramid Thunderhead IPA Seattle
Goose Island IPA Chicago

Many more

It has to be a Crown Float. It's half Strongbow Cider and half Guiness. Due to the difference in density, the Guiness floats on top of the Strongbow...

So you get three distinct flavors in one drink! WHoO!

brewed in my hometown... steam whistle.

Portugal has plenty of excelent beers! Bohemia, Tagos, Abadia, Super Bock, Sagres, etc.
For a more universal brand i would choose Heineken!

Sweetwater 420 is what every good beer drinker in Atlanta drinks. I don't know of any other regional microbrews that have a beer this popular. In Atlanta just ask for a 420 and they'll know what you're talking about.

Fall: Heineken (and Heineken Light)

Thoguh right now I'm loving this Blue Moon Belgian White beer !

westmalle dubbel :)

No question about it -- Anchor Steam! It's not one of those watered-down corporate beers -- it's for real!

I remember first drinking it at an airport bar in San Jose (what a dumpy airport for the heart of Silicon Valley!), and seek it out every chance I can when down that way.

I live in teh heart of the Northwest -- the land hops, Hops, and more HOPS -- and frequently enjoy a nice IPA or Pale Ale -- but love Anchor Steam.

http://www.anchorbrewing.com/

You can't go wrong with:
Pilsner Urquell
St. Pauli Girl
Summit EPA (http://summitbrewing.com/)

Flying Dog - Doggy Style
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

but my favorite is...
Samuel Smith's Winter Welcome Ale

Yeungling (PA's own!), Pilsner Urquell (Czech), and Meisel's Weiss (German).

Manny's Pale Ale
Seattle, WA

http://www.georgetownbeer.com

Oh yeah, also Sapporo and Asahi are great if you want to try Japanese beer.

Shiner Bock.

Fuller's ESB. Fuller's London Porter. Cap City's Amber Waves & Fuel.

Are we talking mainstream beer or any beer we've tasted? If it's mainstream stuff I like to drink a lot of: Pilsner Urquell, Summit Pale Ale, or Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss (available only in the midwest).

If it's brewery beer, the Water Street Brewery in Milwaukee is amazing. During the summer, they have a raspberry weiss with real bits of raspberry in it. I've never found anything as good.

That nobody has mentioned the sublime, dark undertones of New Orleans's Abita Turbodog is a travesty. It's hard to find, though, so understandable. Everyone should check it out. Also of note is 1554, from the Fat Tire brewery (can't remember the name).

In baltimore this place Brewer's art makes their own Belgium style beers. All of them are great, but the best is Resurrection:

"Made with five types of barley malt and lots of
sugar, this beer is quite strong and flavorful, without being too sweet. 7%abv"

Terrapin Rye PA (Atlanta area)

If I have to pick one it would be Smithwicks. Fantastic flavor and light on the pallet.

Rochefort 10

http://www.merchantduvin.com/pages/5_breweries/rochefort_beers.html

BTW: those people that like Stella or Hoegaarden should try a real 'trappist' once. Here in Belgium Stella and Hoegaarden are common everyday beers while 'trappist' is something to savor and enjoy.

1) Stone IPA
2) Shmuttynose IPA (sp?)
3) Victory Hop Devil
4) Hoptical Illusion
5) Brooklyn Lager

Absolute favorite was already mentioned, Westvleteren 12. Impossible to get your hands on these days, but if you ever see it (blue cap, no label), make sure you try it.

For those who want an excellent beer you can get at a wide range of locations, Rogue's Chocolate Stout is a fabulous beer. Available both in 22oz bottles to bring home, or on tap in many excellent bars, this beer manages to be both intricately complex and accessible.

Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA

IPA (India Pale Ale) is a light ale that's extremely hoppy. It originated as a beer made in England to be sent to the Indian colonies. It's high hop content is a preservative for the long boat ride.

An Imperial IPA is basically a double-batch, done with twice as much of every ingredient but water.

Dogfish Head adds hops continually throughout the brewing process, so you get a mellow tone of malted hops, and a very herbal, citrusy flavor of fresh hops. Absolutely amazing stuff.

Guinness or Kilkenny.

There's a lot of beer on this list I will be trying within the next few months.

Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale.

Victory Hop Devil is an other great beer.

Guiness.
Sometimes with Harp or Bass for a Black and Tan.

Dos Equis lager. I know, very pedestrian at best, but it still has an emotional appeal that makes it very... comforting somehow. I don't drink lots of it anymore, I like to drink other kinds of beer, but the ol' XX makes me feel at home...

San Miguel Dark Lager!

Chimay Blue! The champagne of Beers. Made by Belgium Monks so it's backed by God. What else can you ask for? There is nothing else that comes close. Plus its a 9% beer. After one bottle you are in heaven! Here is a good tip. After taking it from the fridge and pouring yourself a glass, leave it out on the counter and it will breath and warm a little. Each glass tates wonderfully different. Baby Jesus approved-

2) Rouge Hazelnut Brown

Mad River Brewery's Steelhead Pale Ale.
A slice of heaven from the heart of the Emerald Triangle.
http://www.madriverbrewing.com/

My winter fave is Mill Street Coffee Porter. Its thick and strong without being heavy. The coffee note is distinct, but its more like a freshly-roasted-bean flavour than a you-got-your-Tim's-in-my-porter kind of flavour.

For the summer, I like Kawartha Lakes Brewing's Raspberry Wheat beer. Mock me for having unmanly tastes, but when its 30C plus the humidex, this is just the right thing. The sourness of the raspberry and the citrusy taste from the wheat makes it very refreshing. Goes great with a nice light sandwhich and some strong cheese.

Belle-Vue Gueuze

Its a lambic out of Belgium and one of the yummiest beers I've ever had.

Westvleteren.
Please read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westvleteren which includes the telling bit:
"Whilst taste is highly subjective and individual, some international beer drinkers consider the Westvleteren 12 to be among their favourite beers. The majority of members of BeerAdvocate.com[4] and RateBeer.com[5], two beer rating websites, consistently rate the Westvleteren 12 as their most enjoyable beer; the 8 and the Blonde also rank highly on both sites.

In June 2005, when Westvleteren 12 was again highlighted as "Best Beer in the World" in a bi-annual competition on RateBeer.com, news organizations followed this up and articles appeared in the international press, highlighting the beer ranking and the unusual business policies."

Dos XX Amber is the best. A perfect example of the German brewing legacy in Mexico. Check out the history, better yet, Try the beer.

I'm still new to beer, so am not a fan of dark beer, though Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss is one of my favorites. If I'm feeling like a good cheap beer, I'll go with Grain Belt Premium.

Guinness - In NZ they used to serve it to male hospital patients!

Guinness is my favorite but Boddington's is a very close second. Honorable mention goes to Corsendonk and Duvel for their rich fragrance and complex palette.

The next time you guys find yourself anywhere in southern Wisconsin, check out these fine microbrews...they are quite worth it.

New Glarus Brewing Company - Fat Squirrel
Capital Brewery - Island Wheat
Gray's Brewing Company - Oatmeal Stout

Well, I would say my favourite is Kingfisher.....hmm, that must be cause its pretty much the only good beer we can get here....from India.....

Upper Canada Dark Ale or
Smithwicks are good for me... but I may go cheaper and have a Heineken

Rouge Brewery (in Newport, OR) makes some of the best beer i have ever had.
Their DEAD GUY ale is a refined taste (despite the name).
Their American Amber is very good, and their Half-A-Wisen (seriously, thats how its spelled and spoken) is a great beer!
Im not sure if its only in the NorthWest, i know their Dead Guy is sold in select places around the US, but their other beers may be local only.

If you ever go to Newport, OR... GO TO THEIR BREWERY, get a sampler... you will love it.

Schlitz - just kidding

definately Chimay (the red bottle)

Blue Moon with a twist of Lemon is delicious.
There's also a local brewery called captain Lawrence Brewing Company, anything from there is great too.

Cold and from the tap! None better and I have tried more beers than many. There is a Blackberry Wheat at a microbrew in Nashville that is incredible as well.

James Squire Original Ale - one for the Aussies, top notch brew. As for the imports, it's gotta be asahi, crisp & fresh and goes down smoove.

St. Bernardous and anything by Allagash in Portland, ME. They make great Belgians, especially their Trippel. Also, lastly but not leastly, just had a glass or two of hoppy Belgian small batch Vlo, which is impossible to find anywhere except the Cafe Belgique just off Dam Platz in Amersterdam.

Moosehead Lager, best beer ever!
http://www.moosehead.ca/

My favorite beer is Saranac, bar none. Not only is it the smoothest and best-tasting domestic beer on the market, but the brewery it's made at gives a great tour w/free drinks at the end! Can't beat that!

Guinness.

I love it so much I have it on tap at home. It was a pain too because it needs a special coupler and you need a Nitrogen\CO2 beer gas mix unlike your normal straight CO2. But it's *highly* worth it.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The definitive west coast Ale - hoppy and just plain delicious.

Yum Yum

Going to school in Chico California (where they make the stuff) had a lot to do with this being my favorite beer. Their Porter is amazingly rich as well.

Chimay Grand Reserve Every sip is like biting into a freshly baked loaf of bread.

As a recent addition to the page, I am suprised and happy to see over 200 posts! My most recent interest in beer is the seasonal Pumpkin Ales. This years favorite (so far) is New Holland Brewing's Ichabod Pumpkin Ale.
http://www.newhollandbrew.com/
Last years favorite however was something to remember. I haven't found any this year, but if you can, (trick or) treat yourself to some of Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale. As I understand, it's made in much smaller quantities, so good luck to you.
http://www.buffalobillsbrewery.com/

I have to go with Blue Moon, its a Molson beer. fantastic with a slice of orange. I can't claim to have experienced a lot of beer, I am only a second year college undergrad after all...but by far my favorite beer to drink.

Newcastle

Another vote for Yuengling.

Rogue Dead Guy if it's cold out, Widmer Hefe Weizen if it's not. If I want something cheap I go for Yuengling or PBR. If I want something stronger, Piraat.

Mythos Lager out of Greece. Not a beer drinker, but this has me hooked and placing special orders. :)

Hoegaarden

It is a white blonde beer, add a slice of lemon to it and it is GLORIOUS. I discovered it in a Pub in London, and now i order it almost twice a month from Beverages and More....MUST TRY...it is AMAZING

http://www.hoegaarden.org.uk/

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.
I try a lot of different kinds of beer, but I always find myself coming back to this one. Easy to drink, great taste and a good alcohol content. A winning recipe!

One word PABST

SAM ADAMS Oktoberfest ! Its the most delicious beer I have ever had

Alpha King IPA from Three Floyds Brewery and Victory Hop Devil and Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA as runner-ups

My favourite beers are;

1. Free beer
2. Any Belgian Beer (Particularly leffe or Chimay)
3. English real ales (Old Peculiar or speckled hen are a good start)
4. German Beer (Lowenbrau, and also the weiss biers)
5. More free beers

1. Old Speckled Hen
2. Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss
3. Guinness
4. Sam Adams Winter Ale
5. Corona

Mac and Jack's African Amber

It's almost worth the plane ticket back to Seattle for another taste.

I'd have to say that Storm Brewing in Vancouver makes the best stout on the planet –Black Plague! And the hoppiest IPA that's a meal all on to its own. If I have to buy bottled, I'll get anything from Unibroue in Quebec especially Maudite.

Optionally, you can listen to the guys at Craft Beer Radio. They have an excellent podcast and are informative without being snotty :)

My favourite brew is the James Squires Golden Ale
http://maltshovel.com.au/golden.asp

It has a definate unique character it, but it very easy to drink. I'd really started to go off the "better" australian beers (it's Coopers town here), but the James Squires beers are all superb.
I really like to finish the night with their Porter too. Dark and chocolatey, but without the heaviness of a stout.

Augustiner Helles, they've been around since 1328, best beer ever!

http://www.augustiner-braeu.de/

For those of you who have never had the opportunity to go to Munich Germany, I feel sorry for your pitiful souls.

Just kidding, but I did grow up in Europe and have been on several beer tours, so check this one out.

My second favorite is Leffe Dunkel, but it's hard to find these days, Belgium Dark beer is great.

Hoegaarden
with slice of lemon & sometimes a slice of orange.

Pilsner Urquell! Great Czech Beer.

Victoria's Bitter from Australia...amazing
I just wish I can get it Stateside

Asahi

PBR, best of the worst, especially when you are low on money.

Bozone Select Amber Ale, best of the best.

Mirror Pond Pale Ale. 100%

http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/

Guinness, Duvel, La Guillotine, Cronenburg, Borostyán (a special hungarian beer. it has a brownish sugar favor, because the malt and the hop is baked, before the actual brewing...)

Most of us Brits drink Stella and Carlsberg but my personal favourite has to be Hoegaarden, a Belgian white beer delicious with half a slice of lemon in the glass. If you're lucky enough to have it on tap in a pub near you-try it.

The best beer in the world: West-Vleteren

http://www.sintsixtus.be/

Also good en easier to get:
blonde leffe:

http://www.interbrewhoreca.nl/merken/leffe/index.htm

Everyone knows that Belgium has the best beer in the World. I happened to come accross a Leffe beer recently that was absolutely amazing. Vieille Cuvee. a nice light malt with a hint of toffee and berry aftertaste. If you ever get the chance, try it.

Chimay. If you have not tried it, you are missing out.

Erdinger! or for a liver busting time, Duvel.

I'm from Belgium and I pretty much like all the beers here.

The ones I drink the most are Primus (http://www.primus.be/index.html?flash=ok) and Stella (artois)

and a very good beer I can recommend is Duvel (http://www.duvel.be/)

Jever is my very favourite beer. It's a 'Pils' as we call it in Germany and tastes a little harsh or tart.- try it!!

http://www.jever.de/

Old Dominion Oak Barrel Stout, if you have not had it - you have not lived.

http://www.olddominion.com/pg/ales

Corsendonk Abbey Pale Ale

Definietly: Chimay.

Sierra Nevada's Porter
Most everything from the Rogue Brewery in Oregon
Anything from local micro "The Great Dane" (Madison, WI only folks)
Boddington's Pub Ale

The list could go on and on... :)

Stella

Widmer Hef!

Hands down Stella Artois
Harp(with a splash of Rose's lime)

My favorite beer of all time was the limited edition Sam Adams Triple Bock sold from 1992-1993.

Bowen Island Bitter...delish, and bites back hard!

http://www.bowenislandbeer.com/english-special-bitter/

http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/BrewPub/OnTap/5832.aspx

This is IT. Black Butte Porter. The best beer in the known universe.

Corona is always a winner (twist of lime), and I'm also quite fond of Dutch beer, but I must say my heart belongs to Tuborg (Green), the beer of Danish Kings... Sure, there is a lot of fancy nice special beers, but as a stabil beer, which you can - almost - always drink, it has to be Tuborg... In Denmark, Tuborg will outdo Carlsberg anytime...

Cheers.

redhook, INDIA pale ale - extremely hoppy

For real IPA men, the best is hard to find and made by the last house in England to use the Burton Union brewing method (which Bass made famous, but abandoned) - Marstons. They aslo make a kick-ass Albion porter and a decent stout too. Wish I could find this again...

Here's just a few:
Sudwerk Marzen
Red Hook ESB
McMenimins Terminator Stout

Caracole Nostradamus
Old Ruffian
Allagash Tripel Reserve

Abita Andygator when I can get it
or
Shiner Bock

"Eye of the Hawk Select Ale"

Mendocino Brewing Co. Ukiah, California
You can't go wrong with a robust amber ale
that hits 8.0% Alc.

Aecht Schenkerla Rauchbier - a great winter beer, smokey and full flavour.

http://www.schlenkerla.de/indexe.htm

Hmmm, beer......

A nice coopers (green or red - http://www.coopers.com.au), james squire (indian pale ale - http://www.jamessquire.com.au/) or something from Western Australia's Matilda Bay Brewery (any pretty much - http://www.matildabay.com/)

100% aussie beer (fosters is the shit we export cause we don't drink it ;))

Pacifico, Steinlager, but mostly red wine

Heineken for me.

Sapporo, hands down.

In no particular order, my favorites are Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale, Sleeman's Cream Ale, and Heineken.

Favourite: Czechvar/Budvar (Czech Budweizer)

Other Good Beers:
Sleeman Original Draught
Steam Whistle
Stella Artois

Dortmunder Gold Lager, from Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland.

It was mentioned once above, but I feel it needs to be mentioned once again...Turbodog from Abita is an amazing Ale brewed in Louisiana!! It's a dark brown ale brewed with Willamette hops and a combination of British pale, crystal and chocolate malts, which gives it a sweet chocolate-toffee like flavor.

www.abita.com

Samuel Adams Boston

Keystone Light.

Current fave is Moylan's "Hopsickle".

That said, I prefer Stone "Imperial Russian Stout" when I can get my hands on it (next time I'm buying a case!).

Hoegarden is top notch, as is Erdinger, I do like my cloudy ones. For striaght up lager, it has to be Alfa, dutch and made from spring water, and its only a 50p a bottle in OneStop, for anyone in the UK, worth chcking out!

rouge hazlenut brown, without a doubt.

Augustiner Braeu Maximator. since 1312 !

Red Oak, check it out if you come to NC.

Belgium - Chimay Bleu

As a cheesehead, it pains me to say that Bell's Amber Ale and Two Hearted Ale are very tasty!

http://www.bellsbeer.com/

Founders (microbrewery out of Grand Rapids, MI) beer is the best beer ever! Beer for beer snobs. Check it out if you're ever in Grand Rapids - you won't be disappointed.

McEwan's Scotch Ale

Fat Tire, Anchor Steam, and Guinness have got to be my top 3. All three are amazing beers. Sadly I cannot get Fat Tire or Anchor Steam here in Germany, but when in Germany you really don't need those with all the outstanding beers that we have here.

For Belgian beer at its finest grab a nice, cold Wittekerke!

Remember, it's the one in the blue can!

Irish! Guiness & Kilkenny

Sweetwater IPA when I've got money to spare
PBR when I don't

I agree with some above. Duvel is the best.
Also try Hapkin if you can find it abroad.
A great thing about living in Belgium is that you can drink some of the best beers from the tap. Much better than from a bottle.

Victory Hop Devil Ale.

Lagunitas IPA (lagunitas.com) topped the list for a while, but has been replaced by Smuttynose IPA: (smuttynose.com)

Nils Oscar India Ale, a fabulous Swedish ale!
http://www.nilsoscar.se/se/ol/indiaale/

Chimay - finest beer in the world - special occasions
Cafferey's XXXX - best English beer
Rogue Dead Guy - is nice

Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale

it varies each week, but right now, shamefully, it's bud.

Landlords
Theakstons
Black Sheep

Hoegarden
Magners (a summer thing)
Carlsberg Cannon (like Tennants Super Strength but actually nice)

Brazilian Skol

This has to be one of the best beers in the world, Venezuelan beer http://www.polarpilsen.com/

Kronenbourg 1664
http://www.k1664.com/

La Fin du Monde is also excellent and at 9% alcohol, brutally efficient.

Stella Artois or Guinness.. gotta have a light and a dark preference.

Augustiner Helles (Munich Beer)

Definately Keiths
But you have to live in Atlantic Canada to have an ample supply.

Anything Lagunitas makes is okay by me; my favorite is their Brown Shugga seasonal.

http://www.lagunitas.com/

Guinness. Poured by somebody that is properly trained on what a real pint is suppose to be.

user-pic

Prince Williams Stout; it puts Guinness to shame. When I lived in Alaska there was a pizza parlor called The Moose's Tooth that had a microbrewery, but no distributors license so the only place to get this awesome stout is at the restaurant.

user-pic

To me, beer is lager and lager is beer. Stout, Ale and Bock are different categories so with lager in mind, here it is:

1) Warsteiner (Germany's no. 1 beer), in a league all its own.
2) Harp (from the lads that brought us Guinness)
3) Sapporo (japanese) in the stainless can (convention says bottled beer is better but the sapporo can is something special!)

* i'm with Dennis Leary when it comes to all those silly flavored microbrewed beer - they aren't beer!

user-pic

P.S.

white beers (hoegarden, starapramen, etc) are for women.

and stella artois, fosters, and kronenberg (the 3 most readily available on tap in london) all taste like horse piss.

Henry Weinhard's private reserve when a local store has it, Sapporo if it doesn't. Miller lite for general purpose getting drunk when taste isn't the big issue but keeping back on the calories is.

Guiness

Any beer made by Bells Brewery in Kalamazoo Michigan is great. But specificly, the Two Hearted Ale is amazing.

Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager. Hard to get where I live unfortunately.

The Sweetwater ales are all great year round. Personal favorites are 420 and Blue.

Yazoo's Dos Perros. All the beer that Yazoo makes is the best. Made in Nashville!

imperial

www.imperialcerveza.com

Wexford Irish Cream Ale or Spaten Optimator

The best beer I've ever tried is Augustiner Braeu; This one is made in Munich.

But, my all-time favorite is Corona.

Saint Arnold's Texas Wheat
http://www.saintarnold.com/products/profiles/texas_wheat.html
- and not just because Texas is in the name - its light and full at the same time, great with a lemon.

Their seasonal Summer is an all-time favorite if you can find it.

My favourite is Innis & Gunn, which is aged for 77 days in oak barrels normally used for whiskey. It's available in the UK and in Canada; don't know about the US.

http://www.innisandgunn.com

You can't beat Missouri's second largest brewery (I don't think I need to mention the one that should be nameless, as 50% of all beer sold comes from these morons)

Boulvard Pale Ale is hands down a wonderful beer by a small brewery that hasn't sucumb to the corporate giants.

San Miguel

"In 1988, The Revolutionary Council Declared

San Miguel

The Official Beer of the
Provisional People's Democratic Republic of
Diego Garcia!

Top 10 Reasons San Miguel is the prefered beer of all true citizens of the PPDRDG:
10. By mid-month, the other choices were Schlitz, Olympia, and Pabst Blue Ribbon
9. It was the only bottled beer on the island
8. Deposit on bottles made the 3 environmentalists on the island happy
7. High alcohol content - could be used start beach-party bonfires
6. It only cost $4 per case - cheaper than Coca Cola
5. When freeze dried and rolled in a cigarette paper, was only legal drug on the island
4. Stubby bottle design prevented serious injury when used "improperly"
3. Brought back happy memories of better days (and nights) in Olongopo
2. There's just something magical about watching women drink beer from a bottle
1. Is listed by FDA as "suitable substitute" for Viagra

Yeah, yeah, I know times have changed out there, and Fosters, Newcastle Brown, Tiger Beer, and Coors are available, but there is only one truely tropical nautical beer - the one that John Wayne, Ward Bond and the rest of that P.T. Boat crew drank in that little bar on Zamboanga in the 1943 movie "They Were Expendible." Except for the kid that had to drink milk because he wasn't 21 yet. "

Spaten beers but the Optimator is oooooh so tasty

Kingfisher is a crisp, refreshing beer from India. I've had the pleasure of travelling around the world several times and I have yet to find a beer that better suits my palette. Kingfisher is most easily found in British Commonwealth nations (Canada, Australia, India, etc.).

Gotta add Lindeman's to the list.

A nice warm pint of Carling never hurt anyone ;-) haha no, I'd say Leffe is the best we get over in the UK.

Anything from Anchor or Samuel Smith
Guinness
Pilsner Urquell

And my personal favorite:
Orval Trappist Monk Ale

Eisenbahn, a Brazilian southern "colonial" handcrafted beer.

www.eisenbahn.com.br

Erdinger

www.erdinger.de

Speight's. I had it every night when traveling through the south island of New Zealand on my honeymoon. I asked a Kiwi friend where you could find it in the United States, and she said that you can't even find it in Aukland. Shame.

My personal favorites are:

Hobgoblin (from the Wychwood breweries)
Golden (from the Archers breweries)

Maudite by Unibroue by far. Although all of their other brews can hold their own as well.

Big fan of pretty much all beer with few exceptions (american beer being some of them), but I never enjoy a beer as much as when I'm having a Guinness or a Chimay Blue.

I see a lot of votes for Dogfish Head and I'd have to agree - great beer. My favorite, though, is Deschutes Mirror Pond Ale form the PNW.

Westmalle Dubbel Trappist. Dark beer by Belgium munks.

Amstel Bright
Brewed with desalinated seawater and 100% natural Curacao ingredients. Very refreshing!

Most of you americans wouldnt have a clue about a good beer, u gotta come visit the small breweries of australia to get the good stuff lol... anyways little creatures is a brewery based in fremantle western australia, it has a great range including pale ale, pilsner and bright ale. After visiting the brewery for a friends birthday and trying the whole selection i the bright ale was a stand out to anythin i have ever drank before, highly recommended!

Fin du Monde. Belgian style triple from Quebec.

http://www.unibroue.com/products/fin.cfm

Can't...pick...just...one...!
Newcastle is a solid favorite any time drinker. St. Bernardus for special ocassions. Young's Double Chocolate Stout for something differernt. Samuel Smith's Nut Brown and Oatmeal Stout are unbeatable. Hoegarrden on a hot day can't be beat. Yuengling for a good cheap beer. There are so many more!!!

Boulevard Wheat w/lemon! Exquisite!!
Subtle texture with excellent taste. Definitely the type of beer one drinks while playing a rousing game of washers, sitting on the porch on a sunny afternoon or anytime friends are around!

http://www.blvdbeer.com/

The company has an excellent story, laid-back culture and tremendous respect from the Kansas City community and surrounding states. (Their ad campaigns are superb as well.)

I can't say good enough things - talk your local liquor store into stocking up on Boulevard Wheat!

Domestic: Yuengling Lager (PA)
Import: Gaffel Kolsch (only brewed in Cologne, Germany)

Mac & Jacks African Amber

can't get it here in hawaii though but always on my to do list when I visit seattle.

user-pic

Celebrator... http://www.merchantduvin.com/pages/5_breweries/celebrator.html
I used to actually buy it cheaper in Honolulu than I can get it in Nashville now. Liquor collection in Ward Center Honolulu used to sell it in 6 packs... now I can only find it here in a 4 pack and at ridiculous prices...

Also had one from there with smoked hops that was great with smoked meat and cheese... just can't remember the name... still hunting.

You all sound like a bunch of girls. How about a freakin' Budweiser? And don't let me hear you whining about "there's no taste". All these over hopped and over malty microbrews could learn something from The King's excellent subtlety and grace and masterful consistency.

Furthermore, unless it's a local micro, what's the point in drinking it? It tastes nothing like what the brewers intended it to because it's so punished! The microbrews that Anheuser Busch distributes are the only one's i'd trust enough to spend money on (widmer brothers among others, is benefiting from this system and it shows).

For shame, only two people have mentioned Budweiser or Bud Light. Shame!

Warsteiner Premium Dunkel, Newcastle, Boulevard Wheat, Guinness just to name a few

Corona with lime

Lion's Head. best college beer. 12bucks for 24 bottles. riddles under the cap. good stuff.

for everyday session beers heineken, tiger and the occasional guinness.

for my entry into "i can find the most obscure beer" competition:
Bia Lao is excellent

Mirco brews aren't 'over hopped' or 'over malty', that's how beer is supposed to taste. And you say WE sound like girls? Further more, Budweiser can't be called beer in Germany since it contains rice as do most other mass produced domestics. Real beer is made with only 4 ingredients: water, barley, yeast and hops. Then again I live between Dogfish Head and Victory so there are a plethora local choices for me.

For micros:
Victory's Golden Monkey - somewhat complex palate and 9% alcohol
Dogfish Head's Raison d'Etre - somewhat complex palate and 8% alcohol

For major brands:
Bass, Harp, Sierra Nevada or Red Hook pale ales, Newcastle

Lambic rasberry beer.

Not my favourite by a long shot but definitly one of the more interesting beers I've had in a long while. Worth a try if you can find it.

Boddingtons
Leffe Brown
Guiness

user-pic

Guiness. Duh.

Distant seconds are Corona and Sam Adams. Sticking to domestic microbrew the best of that junk is Bud-light. Budlight is cheap, less filling, and its cheap. Fosters is good too but usually I am too cheap to pay the money for it and if I want to pay the money for it I might as well be drinking Guiness.

Anything from Hacker Pschorr (the Oktoberfest is awesome). Sam Adams makes a decent Oktoberfest as well, not a big fan of any of their other beers. Yuengling & Guinness are staples. Any oatmeal stout will do - typically, I have Sammy Smith's. Celebrator Doppel Bock is expensive, but worth every penny. Murphey's Cream Ale or Double Dark have become known as the light and dark hammers respectively. They're really good, but they knock me out quickly! Plus, they're amazingly low-priced.

Dale's Pale Ale, Oscar Blues Brewing Co, Lyons, CO
The only decent beer in a can:
http://www.oskarblues.com

or

Cutthroat Porter, Odell Brewing Co, Ft Collins, CO
http://www.odellbrewing.com

If I can find it, Westvleteren St. Sixtus. The rarest of the Belgian Trappist ales (to be "trappist", you must be a functioning monastery, which is why there's only 6 or 7 of them). It's extremely difficult to find in the states, though...yet, well worth the search. Magnificent abbey ale.

For something slightly easier to find, I'd say go for the Grand Cru of the Emperor from Gouden Carolus. Another Belgian, this one is super-dark (but still translucent), super-malty, high alcohol (that it carries well!) and is brewed on one day of the year (24 February). Dark fruit notes, like blackberry and cassis, along with very subtle anise and spice, though they don't put any fruit or spices in it. For a spiced one, try Gouden Carolus' Noel.

Guinness. Extra cold.
www.guiness.com

Innis & Gunn.
Beer aged in oak whiskey barrels. Smooth and delicious.

user-pic

Budweiser? Thats like comparing Pepsi to water. I like beer with flavor... not some water with beer flavoring... the only "light" beer I've ever enjoyed was Michelob Ultra Light....oh and yeah, her MOM bought it.... drink what tastes great not what's good enough for the price... I'm a taste bud and I approve this message.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the iconic Flens - that would be Flensburger Pilsener.

Nothing like a Hoegaarden on a hot summers day!

Chimay from Belgium, one of the most flavorful beers around. Great flavor for those that like to appreciate beer for taste. I'm a fan of the red label.

http://www.chimay.com/en/intro_58.php

Ommegang is a US based brewery that has embraced the art of trappist beer making. They've got a great selection of premium beers. Their Hennepin Ale won the great american beer festival.

Flying Dog IPA
Love the Cascade Hops!

Turoni's Ol'23 Stout. Turoni's Pizzaria and brewery in Evansville, IN. Named for Don Mattingly (ole 23) Great creamy smooth stout beer!

I know it's urbane and all, but I like Bass Ale. Occasionally I like my Heineken too.

Lots of great beers on this list (Ommegang, Hoegaarden, Chimay) and I'm AMAZED at the love for Yuengling ! I liked it myself, but never thought I was in the majority there.

Anyway, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Aventinus or Schneiderweisse. Both made by Schneider Brewing, and Aventinus is the heavier of the two.

Also like Berliner Kindl Weisse, if you're feeling adventurous. But be warned, it is sour !!!!

But the best beer I EVER had was an aged Geuze from Frank Boon. Most complex & amazing beer I've ever had the pleasure to sample.

SweetWater 420 Extra Pale Ale

Widmer Drop Top Amber
Anderson Valley Boont Amber

Asahi (only in Japan, for some reason the stuff brewed here is very different)
Russian River Brewing Porter

Tried a lot of different beers, but I keep coming back to Newcastle Nut Brown Ale.

If you are ever in Greensboro, North Carolina swing by Red Oak brewery and have a Battlefield Black. It's good stuff.

Great Divide Brewing Company's Hercules Double IPA. Find one, buy one, and drink one. You won't regret it. For the review, visit www.2beerguys.com

I love the 90 min IPA from Dogfish head. Pick it up in a 4 pack at a store near you.

Bells Brewing Co. - Two Hearted Ale

The Maudite from Unibroue is definitly my #1 choice.
It's a great strong/Amber Belgian style beer. It even have a so cute artwork. Also like their 750ml bottle format.

It's smell and taste make it a perfect choice with any meal.

Do not abuse from it otherwise... "Maudite geule de bois" around 8 or 9%

Also try the Trois-Pistole... Grrrrr...

Bell's Amber is my fav, but you can't go wrong with any Bell's beer.

Moritz Fiege Pils, made by Privatbrauerei Moritz Fiege GmbH & Co KG, a Family owned brewery with local tradition dating back centuries in Bochum, Germany.
It has a very pronounced hoppy taste and is NOT for everybody. However, most people with a taste for Pilsener type beers get hooked on it quickly as the bitter hops are well complimented by other elemnts of the flavour.
It is available only in and around Bochum.

Every Dogfishhead.

Delaware/Slower Lower Pride

I live abroad in Europe and So I've had a good experience wiht the beers. On a normal day, I will have Denner Lager Hell, for only 25 cents Americans a bottle, its great. Otherwise,I kick it with HofBrauhaus or StrongBow (a cider).

I've tried many of the beers recommended on this page. (I travel a lot.)
Bar none the best beer is Innis and Gunn! Fantastic. The first sip you'll be saying, "What is this guy talking about." But the second through to the end you'll be thanking me.

BTW: This ain't for the 'light' beer crowd. It's strong (close to 7%) and favorful.

They only sell singles in Canada and they run about US$3/bottle! Well worth it.

Shiner Bock

I just tried a regional beer from St Paul from the Summit that I thought was outstanding. I sampled the Oktoberfest and India Pale Ale.

TUCHER!!

Samichlaus. I just discovered this beer. It's excellent. It's aged for a year before it's sold and it's certainly one of the strongest out there at 14% alcohol content. It's a great, flavorful, complex beer. Perfect for winter.

I have a couple. Most recently, it's Michelob Celebration. I think this was a limited brew, but I enjoyed the small bit of it I had. Lots of vanilla. Harpoon UFO if my favorite in the summer. In fall it's Shipyard Pumpkin Head Ale. And for an all time, fall back on favorite, Magic Hat #9.

Anchor, Redhook, Guiness

Peroni
Amstel
Heineken
Windhoek (From South Africa / Namibia; not available in US)

We came across an incredible beer when we were on our beer tour in California. It's available here in select stores (I know Julio's Liquors has it). It's North Coast Old Rasputin Stout, and if you find it, buy it by the case and drink it, assuming you're even remotely a stout fan.

Green Tuborg. Beats them all by miles. I suggest uncrate goes on the prowl and tries to get their hands on a few. Not probably, but THE best beer in the world. ;)

I am VERY spoiled living in Philidelphia, got one of the best beer bars in the country just around the corner Monk's!!!

Lindeman's Framboise - Rasberry Lambic great to impress your lady, they wont believe its beer!!

Chimey/Duvel are both very classy beers and a good way to get your friends away from the popular american beer (if you can call it that)

Abbaye des Rocs Grand Cru is my personal favorite, and the only beer that i've had where the chunks are welcome! (there are chunks of apricot, raison, and hopps floating in the beer)

I've been in the USAF for 24 years - 10 of them in Europe (7 in England, 3.5 in Germany). Let me be clear: I LOVE BEER. Now that I have my bona fide established, by far the best beer I have EVER tasted is Augustiner Hellas from Munich. Absolutely fantastic! Full bodied and so smooooooth.

Can't say enough about it and can't get it here, much to my disappointment.

If anyone knows an importer, please drop a line at rick.carlsen@yahoo.com.

Summit Pale Ale, followed by Summit India Pale Ale, Porter, Pilsner, Grand, Winter Ale, Oatmeal Stout, ESB... EVERY Summit beer is excellent... no joke. If you appreciate good beer, and you can find Summit near you... you have to try some.. EXCELLENT!
