Wilkinson Sword Shave soap, brush and blades in a '40's vintage adjustable safety razor. some times with a little shave oil if it's been a few days and Old Spice after shave. Some times the old school works best.

Mach3 Turbo and water...

The Gillette Fusion Power ($15) is a great razor, well worth the investment. Its vibrating feature isn't just a gimmick, shaving really is easier and more comfortable when it's turned on. And the single blade on the other side is great under your nose and keeping your sideburns in check. The Fusion shaving gel and after shave balm are great, too.
Since using these products, I've gotten a lot of compliments from the fairer sex about the smoothness of my face. Give it a try! You won't be disappointed.

"Old school," as Amos calls it, is the only way to shave. Everything else, you might say, is "pre-school".

Savile row SR-104, Boots shave stick, Merkur Futur, and Merkur DE blades

The Boots shaving stick is the best that I've tried so far, but the only way to get it is to beg an English friend to ship them to you because you can't find them online. (my shippment comes soon!)

proraso shaving creme has mentol. It wakes you up in the morning.

Merkur Classic Safety Razor, a pack of replacement blades costs 15 bucks for 30 double sided blades. Shaves just as good as any new fangled contraption.

Gillette Fusion Power Phantom
Lab Series Maximum Comfort Shave Cream - you get a tingling feeling after applying, it is prevent any irritation from shaving. Great product - last forever since you don't need to apply a lot for it to work
Lab Series Daily Moisture - use this after the shave and your skin will be like baby's...ehm well you get the picture..i can honestly recommend all of the lab series product
if you want to get a real smooth shave..wash your face with Lab series power wash

Anthony Logistics for Men- "Perfect Shave" kit, and a Mach3 razor. The best shave I have ever had!
Josh
The Art of Shaving. It's fantastic.
I also use John Allan's shave cream.
And then there's the standard Mach 3 Turbo for a blade.
DNash
Kiehl's "Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash" or "Facial Fuel Scrub," plus their "Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream" (comes in either scented or unscented, but the scented one has barely any fragrance that I can tell).
I stick to Gillette Sensor Excel 3-blade style. I've tried the 5-blade "Fusion," but don't think it's worth the extra money. It does work well, but the blade head is so big it's awkward to use.
James
Old School Merkur HD Razor for slow mornings, "Red" Gilette Mach 3 for mornings running late.
Rotate between Woods Of Windsor, Proraso, and Art of Shaving creams
Bath and Body Works or Vicky's aftershave

I died laughing at the 8 inch blade and creek water until I saw CNorris as your name, and hit the floor. Very nice.

Mach3 with "Edge ActiveCare Therapy Gel" or when I'm traveling King of Shaves (since it's a non aerosol). Follow up with Brave Soldier Code Blue, which is some good stuff.

Gillette sensor excel disposables with any cream. Leave the scrubs and moisteners to the swans. Why pay all this money when any razor does the work?
doc woodward
king of shaves is the bomb!
i use the alphagel ASC
not only is it the best shave around but it clears your skin at the same time.
i use a gillette fusion. (unpowered because i shave in the shower. call me a luddite but batteries don't belong there)
followed up by grandpappy's favorite dominican bay rum. before this was "hip" my grandfather and great grandfather used bay rum because they knew it drove the ladies wild.
FYI: dominican bay rum changed their formula a couple years back. it used to be alcohol & bay oil but now it says "fragrance."
Scott
L'Occitane shave cream and after balm is the Best. They even have a healing stick if you cut yourself during. Just wet the end of the stick dab and no more bleeder.
Jonathan
I use a Merkur Futur safety razor with Israeli Personna blades (100 pack costs around 20 dollars if you search for them, and last for over 2 years). The best shave creams and after shaves are from Art of Shaving, but are really overpriced. I have found that The Body Shop's "For Men" Shave Cream is amazing, and extremely affordable.
I am still searching for a nice affordable after shave gel that doesn't make me break out...
johnny
I haven't shaved with a blade in 3 years; if I need a little touch up; out come the electric clippers. No knowing really how much $ I save on razors/creams.

Anthony Logistics Shave Cream with a Mach 3 for both my face and my head.

Braun 360 Complete. I can't believe how close this shaves. It's as close as shaving with cream and a razor, going against the grain. It's amazing.
Nelson
I use Anthony Logistics products. I use their pre-shave exfoliant, and their post shave Marshmallow extract to help stop razor burn and speed bumps. For the actual shave I use a Mach 3 Turbo with Edge Active Care shave cream. Seems to work like a charm for me. I've had lots of ingrowns under my chin, but the Anthony stuff has really helped with clearing it up.
Brian
Merkur long handle razor. Merkur blades, or Schick if I'm feeling cheap (still good though). Proraso, Musgo Real, Caswell & Massey Creams, and a badger/bristle blend brush. Top off with proraso aftershave cream with menthol.
"Old school" safety razors are the best ever. Anyone telling me they get a better shave out of their Mach whatever has been brainwashed by advertising.
Gza Mez
I shave with panasonic self cleaning electric razor due to hypersenitivity with all straight razors. Before I shave I apply lab series shave oil.(Not electric shave balm)
Then use anti razor burn balm by lab series and 3 in 1 post shave healer.
I never thought I would ever use an electric but they really get a clean smooth shave with much less irritation then I got with the blade.

Gillette Fusion Power
Jack Black Face Buff
Sharp's Kid Glove Shaving Gel or Body Shop for men shave cream

I'm suprised no one else has mentioned it, It's the finest shave cream I've ever tried, Geo F. Trumper's Coconut Oil Shaving Cream. It's incredible, I hate shaving but this stuff makes it a joy. As a side note, If you are ever in London and feel like spoiling yourself you should go to their shop in Mayfair and get a shave. It's old school all the way and as I remember it ran us about 80$. It's intense having someone else shave you with a straight edge razor. Definitely the closest shave I've ever had.

Nivea shave gel for men (in the white bottle, got mine at Target) and a Mach III razor. I had been using other gels but I think I'll be using the Nivea from now on, it's really nice and smooth and you hardly need any to get a good lather.
gwyneth cornrow

Best shave on earth, i've bought everything under the sun and this is my verdict: Keihls Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream - White Eagle (base layer) then add a little Gillete Fusion cream on top combine with a Fusion razor, it'll get you face as smooth as a babies ass. Anthony Logistics after shave cream for that final touch.
GregB
pre shave: neutrogena pre-shave facial wash
shave: Crabtree & Evelyn sandalwood shaving cream with natural badger brush and gillete mach 3 (non-powered model).
after shave: cold water and then neutrogena facial moisurizer

An old Mach II and bar soap. Clubman aftershave. Shave in the shower when beard is really softened.
Clubman is cheap and everyone loves the smell.

Regardless of razor, lotion and cream, the single greatest shaving product is the fogless mirror. Nothing is better for my skin than shaving in the shower and it's convenient as well. Add your toothbrush and toothpaste and your ready for the world when you step out of the shower.
It probably doesn't matter which one you have. Mine is similar to this one at Brookstone:

Proasso Shaving Cream, Murkur Hefty Classic DE, Feather DE blades and a medium sized Vuflux best badger brush. That's all from www.classicshaving.com. Occasionally I use Trumpers Skin Food (Coral) from www.qedusa.com. It's the best aftershave I've ever used.
JQbomb
Jack Black Face Buff and Beard Lube with a Gilette Fusion. The Jack Black line is first rate, and in combination with Murad moisturizer my skin is probably the best looking since I was a child.

I've found that it's far easier to shave in the shower so here's the plan:
Pre-shave
Sharps Daily Prep Foaming Scrub
Bluebeard's Original Beard Wash (goatee)
Shave
Men-U Ultra Concentrate Shave Cream
Art of Shaving badger hair brush
Gillette Sensor 3
Post-shave
Sharps Daily Prep Skin Tuner
Jack Black SPF20 Face Moisturizer
Bluebeard's Original Beard Saver (goatee)
Chris
Jack Black Beard Lube.
Pre-shave oil, shave gel and moisturizer all in one.
And it's relatively cheap (especially considering you do not need a lot of it).

If you know you are going to shave in the morning (or later in the day) put on some Neutrogena post shave lotion after you wash your face. The next time you shave (even if you just got out of the shower and have already washed your face) your facial hair is nice and smooth and the shave is amazing. No need to purchase any other pre-shave lotions....works like a charm for me...

No shaving! I have very thick facial hair and decided a year ago that shaving was no longer a comfortable option.
I use electric clippers to keep my beard very short and I had laser hair removal to get rid of the silly neck beard. Its been absolutely wonderful!

Old school is the only way to go. Multiple blade cartridges are a money making gimmick that doesnt work as well as the original technology.

I gave up special-made shaving creams and foams and all the rest of it when I was living in Indonesia I I couldn't get my normal stuff and started shaving with plain old conditioner - and not only is my face more moisturized, but my shaves are closer and I'm saving money.

Somersets Skin Care Company (www.somersets.com) has by far the bestshaving products ever. I discovered it while I was in England a few years ago. They not only have amazing shaving oils, but also skin care moisturizers and aftershave with SPF sunblock. I have terribly sensative skin and also have the pleasure of growing very corse facial hair. If not for this stuff, I would not be able to shave on a daily basis. I usually order it off of eBay, but you can also get it directly off their website, though they are based out of the U.K.

In the summer I use a a Headblade + Mach III.

The Art of Shaving Shaving Oil, Shave Soap, and Travel Brush
http://www.theartofshaving.com/taos6/home.php
> Just started using and having very good results. Made the change to keep my travel system consistent with my at home system; small bottle of shave oil is easier to get into TSA ziplock. Shave soap isn't aerosol, gel, or liquid so it doesn't have to go into the ziplock. May try some other soaps and oils in the future.
> Have tried Kiehl's, but it's so thick that it clogs the blades too quickly
> Liked King of Shaves, but shave my head also and need visual indication that I've hit every spot in the back. King of Shaves is transparent.
Blade for face
GE Fusion (non-powered)
http://www.gillettefusion.com/us/
> Basically because it the latest from Gillette. Like it slightly more the Mach 3, but not by much. May give Merkur a shot based on recommendations above.
Blade for head
http://www.schick.com/products/default.asp?p=183
> This is the BEST for shaving your head. Blade flexes, which is useless for my face, but works great on the head. Much better than Headblade in my opinion.
Other equipment
Fogless shower mirror (from Bed, Bath, and Beyond)
Handheld womens hand mirror (Target) for back of head

Burt's Bees Facial Moisturizer (or whatever's handy)

Mach3 and soap lather in the shower. I don't even try to 'wet shave' outside the shower, just get cut up. Soap lather works fine.

I have what's been called a "mature" beard - thick and grows fast. Tried for many years to find the perfect shave combo. This is as close to perfect that I have come:
Total Shaving Solution shave oil (used this for years - best oil I've used).
Art of Shaving Shave Cream applied with Badger Hair brush (imperative if you have a thicker beard).
Gillette Mach 3 Turbo (vibration is great for sensitive skin. Also, I see no benefit to the more expensive Fusion. I've used both and neither my girlfriend or I noticed a difference).
Kiehl's Soothing, Nourishing Face Cream (Far and away the best after-shave cream I've tried - and I've tried a lot of the stuff posted on this board. Kiehl's products are excellent).
Tom
Kiss My Face shaving cream rocks (any fragrance, though I'm a fan of the patchouli). Not only provides for a close shave, but has practically eliminated pimples; I can't remember the last time I broke out.

I have a very thick beard and shaving was a real pain for many years. I try electrics every few years hoping they've improved, but it's like mowing a think lawn with a kids toy lawnmower.
Of course, you must shave after a shower for best results.
For a razor, I use the Mach 3 Power. It's like the best of electric and razor in one.
But the REAL key to my comfortable shave is the shaving cream - Lab Series Maximum Comfort Shave Cream. That tingling feeling another poster described is actually due to Benzocaine which is an anesthetic that numbs your skin. After using this product, I can't use anything else. With other products, I just feel the razor scraping across my face. I just can't stand it.
I should also mention that like other products mentioned, it's cream based, not a foam. This also helps the blade to glide more smoothly over the skin.
One $20 tub lasts me about one year since you need so little.
Gordon
Forgot to mention, since I work for a company that sells hair removal lasers, I'm also currently having the "neck beard" removed. More guys should look into it.

I use the Anthony Logistics Perfect Shave kit. It's a fantastic well priced shave regimen, and at the cost of $50, really can't be beat,
http://gearpatrol.com/blog/2007/04/03/the-perfect-shave-kit-by-anthony-logistics/
My shaving routine usually occurs every other day in the late evening when I can spend the 15-20 minutes to do each step:
- washing face with glycolic facial cleanser
- dabbing generous portion of shaving cream
- using mach 3 razor kept hot with running hot water
- finishing off with the coconut after shave balm.
I usually add a light splash of Nickel body cooler on the upper neck/chin area half an hour or so later to keep things especially smooth.
Makes my face like a hundred dollars.

The Art of Shavine: Unscented shaving cream, pre-shave oil and silvertip badger brush. Gillette fusion power and CO bigaloe face moisturizer. And i only shave after a hot shower.

I've tried many different products over the years but nowadays I use mostly Clarins stuff - excellent quality. Clinique's pretty good, too.
Duke
Jack Black Beard Lube and a Gilette Fusion Power. Beard Lube is the most amazing stuff I've ever bought. Closest shave I've ever had, no irritation, no razorburn...I just wish they sold it in larger sizes.
Also the Fusion Power isn't a gimmick. It's not earth-shattering either. It helps a little bit over a basic non-powered razor.
I take issue with gwyneth cornrow. I use Beard Lube on my Cash & Prizes every week. Works perfectly. Although I have a non-powered Fusion for the job. The powered version tickles...um, in a manly way. :)
theeditor
I start with an eShave towel soaked in hot water, followed by Clarins Lift Off Power Wash and lather it into my beard to lift the whiskers. Then I apply with a shaving brush Jack Black or Woody's shaving creme and then Jack Black post-shave gel or Anthony's Astringent. I use a Gillete Fusion razor. Using these products I only really need to shave twice a week.
Darshan
I've been using a Merkur Double Edge razor (w/ Merkur Blades) and Proraso Shaving Cream. It dosen't get better than that. I just bought 100 Derby blades for $15 they will last me 7-10 clean close shaves a peice, try to beat that with a Gillete. Once you go double edge you won't go back.
Joel
The Body Shop's "For Men Shave Cream" and a Gillete Fusion razor (just got) + a set of remmington clippers for the beardy bit.

I was recently introduced to the "Art of Shaving" line of products at their L.A. store in the Century Plaza. I chose the Lemon kit which included their pre-shave oil, shave cream, a lathering brush, and their after-shave balm. The shave was great. The essential oil based products left a nice lingering scent all day and my skin did not feel dry or irritated the way it usually does after shaving. The BEST hands down shave cream on the market is , Peter Thomas Roth's 21st Century Shave Cream. I used to have major breakouts from ingrown hairs, seeing as how im very fair complected. Ive never felt my face so smooth and clear.
I use Kanebo's silk peeling powder to exfoliate before i shave.

Merkur Futur safety razor with personna double edge blades (or one of several Gillette old school safety razors). Shavemac badger brush. Taylor of Old Bond Street creams (St. James, Rose, etc) or Truefit & Hill West Indian Limes cream. After the shave: witch hazel followed by Master's bay rum.
Multi-blade madness is all marketing and no method.

Old school Gillette all the way. I use a 1957 Gillette razor like the one with which my Father taught me to shave, Gillette foamy shaving cream, and when I can manage to find them, Gillette blue blades. If only those would come back into production. Otherwise, I use the closest thing to the Gillette Spoiler blade, the Personna blade.

I switched to shaving with conditioner. I found that lubrication is a huge factor. Canned cream just doesn't lubricate enough, which gave me lots of razor burn. I tried the Mach3 and Fusion. While they do work suprisingly well with just canned shaving cream, I didn't get more than 10 shaves out of a cartridge, and they are just expensive. I went back to my trusty old Sensor while using conditioner. I get nearly 30 shaves out of each cartridge. The shave from my old Sensor is so close and comfortable, it makes the Fusion's cost completely unnecessary.
Shaving is becoming a lost art. I found out that these new multi blade razors are designed with less and less learning curve with each new razor, which is just perfect for suckering new teenagers into a lifetime of overpriced cartridges. And yes those goopy lube strips help a little with canned cream, but you don't need those strips with proper lubrication.
