Nestled away just a few blocks from the Moscone Center is San Francisco's rock n' roll crash pad, the Phoenix Hotel ($120+ a night). The 50's-style layout has all rooms opening into a central gated courtyard, filled with interesting art, plenty of benches and places to play music or chat with other guests, and a heated pool, which is tiled with 69's (heh) on the bottom. The hotel is also home to the Bambuddha Lounge, a favorite spot of the Rolling Stones when they're in town. No matter whether you're there scouting for celebrities, recharging your creative batteries, or just partying your ass off (this ain't the Westin), you'll find it's the one of the best scenes in San Fran, and a good value as well.
