What is a good date movie, available on DVD, to watch with a woman?

Down With Love. This one flew under the radar but it's an amazing movie. Funny for guys and cute for girls. A visual blast from the past in style and camera technique.

the absolute best is a movie called "Dangerous Beauty" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118892/

Its the ('true') story of a woman in old Venice who was a courtesan, and wrote poetry among other things, and was eventually killed for being a 'witch' as part of a religious uprising.

It has alot of funny stuff in it, some tasteful nudity, some swordfights, and good acting all around. Think of it as being similar to The Princess Bride, but with less of a 'fantasy-comedy' tilt to it.

The Princess Bride and Don Juan DeMarco are very good suggestions.

The Princess Bridge is definitely up there. I am partial to Forrest Gump myself.

"Once" - beautiful romantically themed Irish pseudo-musical with a haunting soundtrack - sure to make the couch a little cozier. This, of course, assuming she has already seen "The Princess Bride."

Pick something classic and enjoyable she probably hasn't seen already and you'll win extra points. I highly recommend The Apartment (1960). It's clever, romantic without being sappy, and surprisingly modern. Jack Lemmon is hilarious.

For recent under-watched movies, I recommend Away We Go, or Adventureland.

She's Just Not Into You

Firstly, the cast is large so there are oportunities to talk about the actor's and their movies in general. Secondly, the story is honest and entertaining without being mushy or raunchy. Lastly it is a great way to guage how your date views relationships by wathcing her reation to the scenarios in the movie.

"Stardust"

Check out the reviews - basically everyone agrees that it's the next Princess Bride. There's a good chance she hasn't seen it, so you don't have the cheesy factor of advertising that you are pandering (don't get me wrong, I love Princess Bride as much as the next person). Trust me on this one, and you can send me a thank-you note the next morning :)

The French film "Le Hussard sur le Toit" (Horseman on the Roof or even, "La Femme Nikita," depending on the woman. Both sexy female empowerment films. And French.

I think 'Shopgirl' would be a good, more modern, choice.

As a chick who also happens to date chicks, I tend to be pretty good at picking date movies.

I've always thought Amelie is perfect. It's a beautiful french film, highly romantic, but (in my opinion) not overly mushy. Great for a girl you'd like to "date" date.

Tcorreia has a good suggestion with Stardust, too. I haven't seen the film, but I've ready the book. It's romantic but highly adventurous.

For a date with a less, erm... long-term girl (or perhaps with a long-term girl as well), I have to agree with doughnut - The Secretary is phenomenal. Though, if it's one of your first dates, I'd say you might want to wait. For me, it's a bit too sexual and might come off a bit heavy handed.

Hitch. It's not too serious, lots of comedy, with a great looking cast.

The Proposal is a really good movie. It's a romantic comedy, but not too sappy, you'll actually like it.

Alex, If you want to get a great date movie go for The Proposal or The Ugly Truth that just came out. Both are funny and not to serious. You don't want her to think your already making plans to get married by watching The Notebook or some other sappy S#!%. Another all time classic is Sleepless in Seattle. The Princess Bride is over played and everyone knows it but too afraid to admit it.

on 4 occasions in my bachelor days 4 different ladies have selected "the Goonies" as the first movie we've watched together. nothing else comes close.

there is some science that suggests that women become horny when they watch scary movies. give that a try.

i've watched "the beach" with a bunch of different dates... that seemed to 'work" for me. ladies love leonardo dicaprio.

Love Actually

Some may disagree, but i think the best date movie is one that will get you talking, maybe find out something about someone you didn't know before. A movie that i think perfectly fits the bill: "Man on Wire" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1155592/

Absolutely fascinating.

Fandango, starring young Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson is a great unknown movie that will score you some points.

I'm gonna offer up a slightly unconventional answer that has always had good date results: The Girl Next Door

it works from the very setup of even proposing such a movie to a girl: you have to talk it up as a seriously good movie, and she has to let her guard down a bit to go on your whim.

And the surprise surprise: a teen movie about a boys fantasy of having a porn star as a neighbour ends up being a really fantastic movie.

This is all due to super acting and very deep
chemistry between the lead couple. It's all out touching actually, and pretty romantic.

The rediculous plotline and overall fun comedy work well.

Extra bonus: killer soundtrack.

The Big Lebowski

Funny as hell, kind of romantic, and can be turned into a drinking game easily enough.

Plus, in the space of an hour and a half you get to see whether she's really worth dating as well.

Chocolat, PS I Love you, Bridges of Madison County, When Harry Met Sally, Blood Diamond, these are all great movies that I found should apeal to both depending on what you are in the mood for.

This is almost turning into a best movie competition and having read through the suggestions you really can't go wrong with any of them for either date or personal viewing.

The Princess Bride and Stardust are both very good! A great 'trick' is when she has seen one but not the other, play the "Oh, you'll love X then" and substitute whichever she hasn't seen.

But in all honestly, try Finding Nemo. Timeless, cute, hilarious and you can always play it off as a joke if she balks.
