Not the ones from Target, but a mug with thick glass and sophistication.
There is only one way to go. The Battle Mug
Don't kid around, this ends all other mug challenges! I love mine!
If you want something just like they have at your local bar, search for the keywords "restaurant", "supply", barware". Anchor Hocking is the gold standard in no-nonsense glassware. You've probably seen their little "L" logo in the bottom of many glasses. Here's your basic 12oz. beer mug . You have to buy in bulk, but if you have friends who are willing to split the cost, you can each get a half dozen for just over $20.
Bar Products will allow you to do smaller glassware orders. Their Barconic Line is good stuff
If you want to go for the original, legit German look (and by German, I mean Bavarian, specifically), I recently visited the Hofbrauhaus in Munich and managed to pick a real literstein (stoneware with a metal lid to keep the beer garden gunk from falling in your brewski). It feels a little ridiculous sitting down to watch a football game holding a liter of beer in a stoneware stein, but quite fun too. My wife just rolls her eyes.
Here's one place you can pick a similar one up, with a variety of original German styles:
I like Kegworks.com for my barware. The beer glass selection is here
Check your local craft brewpub.
Iron Hill is a local favorite. They offer a 1 year mug club membership for all their locations which comes with a 24oz. handcrafted mug for home use. Every year the style changes. It's rugged and well made.
Or check Esty

If you want a real mug, I always liked the dimpled glass beer mugs. Looks similar to standard bar mugs but the glass is has large dimples in it. I think it gives a little more sophistication.
Dimpled mug with Hofbrauhaus Munchen logo
But if your looking for a glass to poor just one beer into theres no better way to go then the Samuel Adams beer glass
They specifically designed the glass to enhance the flavors and aromas of the beer. Check the link to see what I mean.
If your looking for a good beer mug, I've always been a fan of the Dimpled beer mugs
They have the good thick glass and feel of normal bar mugs with a little more sophistication.
But if you looking for just a glass and not a mug. Theres no better way to go then a Samuel Adams Glass
They designed that glass to enhance the flavor and aromas of the beer. Check the link to see how and to order one.
If your'e looking for a beer glass that has a handle and is sturdy, how about a Barber Glass?
Not to spout off about my own products, but I can make you a pretty badass beer mug with... your face, your pet or your wife hand etched into it with a supplied photo. Check out some samples here:

Crate and Barrel has good mugs. Large, heavy, but somewhat expensive.
