Looking for shorts for the gym that contain pockets suitable to hold an iPhone and an ID Card. The ones I have now have no pockets and it's quite frustrating.
I bought 2 pairs of Champion mesh Lacrosse Shorts at Sports Authority for about $15 - most comfortable I have ever owned and have pockets big enough for your needs and more...
I bought these New Balance shorts from Amazon for running but they would work well in the gym too. They are longer but not Rafael Nadal long. Have a pocket down the left leg, not front pockets which I prefer. Keeps the phone and whatever else out of the way.
I have several pairs of Nike DriFit shorts. They are extremely comfortable to work out in or just lounge around the house.

What you really need are the Lululemon Shorts for men. I have two pairs and use them for the gym, running and swimming. They fit brilliantly and have 4 pockets.
Honestly, FinishLine has their own brand of clothes. Their shorts are comfortable, have pockets and are a great length if you're taller (I'm 6'3"). They also usually sell that at a big discount compared to the big name brands.
I've heard great things about Lululemon products so definitely check those out. I wear some Nike dri-fit shorts with pockets but just have an iPod shuffle so it's much smaller than an iPhone and they handle that fine. An iPhone might be too heavy to be comfortable.
My suggestion? Try to find some rock-climbing shorts. They'll be comfortable, flexible, keep you cool, and will have some pockets for your "stuff."

Hands down, Lululemon Shorts for men. Perfect fit and support.
I'm loving the ClimaCool range from Adidas
I bought Underarmour shorts early in summer, and absolutely love them. They're great for working out, tennis, and volleyball. Easily my go-to shorts anymore.
Find any pair of Rugby Training Shorts, they are just long enough, have ventilation, pockets, and durability
Have a pair of the under armour lax shorts but they are almost too stretchy and not comfortable. Still rocking them, but I recently bought the lightning wear lacrosse shorts with pockets and refuse to take them off. By far the nicest shorts I have ever worn.
