No, definitely not. It defeats the entire purpose of board shorts. Plus, you look like a tool/tourist. I only mention this, because if you're asking, you're obviously concerned about what other people are thinking. As someone who grew up on the beach, us locals are thinking "tool/tourist!"
Some people claim they wear boxers underneath in order to avoid a rash of some sort, or it's just more comfortable, etc. I call bullshit. There's is nothing worse than having wet boxers an hour after your board shorts have dried. The rash thing is just ridiculous. All that cotton is going to do is soak up more salt and be more uncomfortable when they dry (they get stiff).
Be a man, and let your junk breathe in that ocean goodness.
I'm gonna come out and say it is all about personal preference. If your comfortable wearing nothing underneath than by all means go for it, if not throw some boxer briefs underneath. I'd recommend some briefs that are not 100% cotton, maybe a 65/30/5 cotton polyester spandex blend.
I don't wear underwear under board shorts. Since they are so long the boys are well protected. I personally think that when someone has board shorts on and their boxers are showing it looks worse than plumber butt!
I personally throw on a pair of jammers jammers under my boardshorts. They keep everything in place, won't look weird if you have to take your boardies off and they dry just as quickly as your boardshorts.

I have tried non-cotton boxer briefs that dry quickly. Seems OK. I would prefer not to wear anything underneath but things in front seem to show too much when still wet. I don't care myself but I don't want to offend anyone. Any thoughts?
Having had much experience in the industry of surfing and water sports, i have found it more comfortable to wear a pair of compression shorts made by companies such as Nike or UnderArmor. These add extra support and prevent sand from getting where it shouldn't. But if you like to go comando under yours thats your choice, not mine.
If you're buying boardshorts from Hollister, feel free to wear your boxers under them.
Such an amateur move.
No, seriously, no. But make sure that you get a pair that fits or that you can pull it off. Having your crack out or your gut flowing over the top is almost just as bad
I agree with the go commando sentiments but would not look down on someone wearing Under Armour under neath- you gotta protect the boys and we must protect this house...
i will answer this from someone who has lived by the beach in so. cal my whole life. hell no you will look like a total kook! board shorts are freedom for your balls. let my balls free!!
Nope. Get boardshorts that don't show your ass crack and legs trim enough to hide your junk. Enjoy the commando freedom while it lasts.
There is no better solution than Under Armour BoxerJock. They are lightweight, breathable, and dry in minutes. And here's a secret: women love the compression fit.
Also good for snowboarding or skiing.
I'm not sure about anyone else, but I like some support when I surf. Getting slammed into the board is no fun when your junk is out of place.
A good pair of boardshort won't rash. Make sure they have what's called a "neofly" the name changes by company, but it is essentially a flap of neoprene or lycra between your junk and the fly area on the short. A good pair of boardshorts should have that and a nice stretchy material. This should limit the best and worst of all rashes. Don't wear boxers or briefs, it's a sign that your clothes don't fit, or you're a tourist. Also good luck matching your boxers to board shorts.
If you don't like chafing and/or prefer some support, you should try the black rashguard shorts (they go under any boardshorts) made by surfing company O'Neill. Google for:
o'neill skins shorts
and you'll find links to these surfer undershorts. The 6oz variety is light, dries extremely quickly, and prevents chafing. Highly recommended. I have no connection to this company; I just haven't seen competing products by other companies.

I personally don't. The point of board shorts is to be quick drying and adding an extra layer (underwear) is going to slow that down.
If you feel you have to wear something, I would recommend a pair of Speedos (or something similar). This will support "your boys" and still be quick drying. Just make sure that the board shorts stay on because no one wants to see someone in a banana hammock unless you are swimming for a gold medal.
