make sure your tires are properly inflated, and your air filter and spark plugs are clean.

$1000 on a high compression N/A motor won't get you very much. Even if you went with a cold air intake, catless exhaust and an ECU tune at best you might muster 15-20whp; not to mention you'd throw your warranty out the window.

My opinion would be to invest that $1000 into a performance driving course to make yourself faster. That's something you can take into any car :)

Also, keep in mind, if you're looking to run any auto-x events in the future something as simple as an after-market muffler could put you in a class you could never be competitive in.

Take a look at the product line of motordyneengineering.com. Their exhausts are expensive but for some cheap power add the Plenum spacer to your list, maybe the XYZ pipe and the MREV 2 they have out. All of their products are beautiful and proven products. For a less than a grand you could grab the XYZ pipe and plenum spacer. As others have stated take a look at my350z.com and g35driver.com. Lots of good info.

Simple answer, go with nitrous. It is the cheapest and most dangerous way to get max horse power for your money. Three hundred dollars will net you an extra 100 bhp. But be warned, juicing the car creates a lot of extra stress and heat to the internals of the engine.

Forget power. For $1000 you'll get maybe 5 percent more, but you can greatly improve the fun of your ride by improving the suspension. A set of shocks, springs and anti-roll bars will make a huge difference, and may give you a better launch (i.e. faster to 60) as well. And don't skimp on tires when it comes time for replacement.

Easiest way to gain horsepower/fun with a 350Z and $1000? Trade it for a used STi or Evo.

The 350Z only has 10-15hp to tap from a reflash/tune and intake/exhaust mods. And you won't get quality for $1000. There's some charts for download at PFM (login required) and a lengthy article that won't be printed in Nissan Sport Mag because the results are, well, predictably crappy.

Wanna do suspension instead? Sorry, $1000 isn't gonna cut it for anything but Eibachs and, well, just Eibachs. Unless you goto garbage brands like Megan Racing anyway. FYI: suspension installation sucks a big bag of ass on a Z.

Brakes? Wheels and tires? Fuhgedaboutit. Come back when you can afford it.

Roll bars and bushings? Now you're talking. Don't buy garbage, and remember hard urethane just makes noise. You CAN do that for under $1000. If you do it yourself, you might be able to get the springs and struts in under budget too.

About garbage: don't buy it. That is all.

Sure, you can goto My350Z and hang out with all the 17-21 year olds whose daddys bought them a Z. Do you want to? My suggestion is to only go there for the for sale/trade area, its the only useful part.
