There is one surefire way to eliminate your problem for good-Paint the walls. In the end, this is a worth while investment of time and best to be done when you first move in. A painter's kit with rollers, drop cloth and paint tray is $5 at Lowe's and you get to personalize your place, something over looked by your guy friends, but appreciated by any woman who walks through the door. Make sure to use a gloss or eggshell finish so your walls will be easy to clean in the future. If the walls already have color, prime the wall first with Killz primer.

The best way to naturally get rid of that old people's smell is to diffuse 100% pure essential oils. The guys at Air Aroma have designed a great looking home diffuser that only uses cold air to diffuse their essential oil blends. It is called the Aromax: http://www.air-aroma.com/Diffuser-Details.aspx?id=2 . I have one of them at home and they work fantastically (and look fantastic too).
i have large half bowl shaped lamps in my apt. What i've started doing is get New Yankee car air fresheners off their website and putting them in the lamp. Be sure not to let them touch the bulb. Because of the shape of the lamp, no one can see inside of them. The one i use are the, Mid Summers Night, scent.
My family has owned and operated an independent paint store in NY for 43 years, so I agree that painting your walls will be the first step to eleminate your odor. However, do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from Lowes. Get yourself some decent painting supplies and top-of-the-line paint, anything less won't do the job the right way.
Make sure your walls and ceilings are clean. Then prime them with a product by the Zinser company called BIN. This is an alcohol based primer that is an odor killer and stain sealer. However, this stuff will stink like hell when you are using it, so make sure you ventilate properly. Once dry (within a few hours) top coat with any Benjamin Moore product. Go to your local paint store and ask for one of the following products - AURA (top of the line), Regal (second best, still better than anything at Lowes) or NATURA (environmentaly friendly, excellent product). Pick your colors and enjoy!

"Smells Begone" works very well at removing odor, and leaves only a slight fragrance behind.
I use the "Energizing Citrus" scent in 4 rooms in my home, and even though it's kind of expensive, it does last quite a while.
You can buy it online from many different places, but it's usually cheaper to buy from eBay or Bed Bath and Beyond
