They're great for camping - light weight, absorbent, durable, and can be wrung out to rather quickly. I don't see why they wouldn't work for the gym, and I can understand not wanting to pay the extra $$ for them to give you one.

The Sammy sounds like what you're looking for. It's the same towel you see divers use in competition, and throw off the tower or board. The case it comes with is about the size of a water bottle, and it absorbs a lot of liquid. Once it's absorbed a lot of liquid, all you have to do is squeeze it out (you can tell because it looks darker when it's saturated). They're cheap, proven, and last a surprisingly long time. I've been using the first one I ever got for well over ten years now, and I swim and play water polo pretty much year-round. Works for pool and shower water alike. You can even dehydrate it completely, soak it in water, squeeze it out, and it will work just as well as the first day you had it.
And as for Alain's recommendation, I'm pretty sure the Sham-Wow is a larger-sized knockoff of this same material. At least, that's the thought that struck me when I saw the commercial.

A chamois is the only thing that will really get you semi-dry without getting really wet.
Alternatively, join a gym that provides towels?
