Apps I absolutely cannot live without:
Tiffen Photo fx-
An absolutely indispensable photo editing app. Almost every photo I take on my phone passes through this app before going anywhere. It's the iPhone version of the famous Photoshop plug-ins from the makers of real glass filters and Steadicams. $2.99
Tweetie-
With all the debate over the measly $3 this app will cost for version 2 (imminent--wait for it like Jamie said), you'd think there's some kind of loyal fan base. Absolutely the best Twitter client, hands down. $2.99
Facebook-
No brainer. The Facebook 3.0 app for iPhone is the best iteration yet, and quite possibly one of the best iPhone apps around. Free
Flight Control-
Slick, simple game. One of, if not the most original game concepts I've ever seen. Graphics, gameplay, and sounds are all top-notch. This is an absolute STEAL at $0.99 cents.
Ramp Champ-
If Apple were to design an iPhone game, this would be it. One of the best looking games I've ever seen. Detail and creativity is incredible here. The guys at Iconfactory have outdone themselves with another completely original game concept for this phone. When you get tired of the 4 amazing looking levels that come free, you can start adding new packs for $1 a piece in the game. $1.00

Facebook - The interface design of the app is top notch, probably one of the best out there. And if you're on Facebook, it's a no-brainer that you should have this app.
Harbor Master - This is a game that's the boat version of Flight Control, but different developers. They take the concept of Flight Control one step further, and it's pure brilliance. Definitely worth paying for.
Twitterific - Great app for Twitter users, and I actually like it better than Tweetie... well, until Tweetie 2 comes out.
NetNewsWire - This is probably the best RSS reader in the app store. They just recently updated it, too, so it's great for reading your feeds, and now syncs up with Google Reader.
ESPN Scorecenter - This pretty self explanatory. If you like sports and want scores on the go, then you need this.
1. ToDo - simple interface To Do list, really good for keeping your life in order
2. Midomi Ultra - the quintessential hold-your-iPhone-up-to-the-speakers song identifier app
3. Navigon - turn-by-turn directions on your phone. 'Nuff said.
4. Oxford English Dictionary and Thesaurus (with Audio) - comprehensive dictionary/thesaurus with pronunciations of almost every word
5. Pandora - who needs music on their phone when you have Pandora?
Here is my top 5 Apps :
Facebook (Free)
I think the app is more user friendly than connect facebook on a regular browser except for the video (not yet supported)
Fring (Free)
MSN, Skype, AIM, ICQ and more in the same app. Allow you to make some SIP call, very useful to lower your phone bill.
WhatsApp (0.79€ I am on the French AppStore)
The iPhone's BBM. Works very well, will soon be available for BlackBerry so you'll be able to chat with all your friends.
FreeRSS (Free)
Check all your favorites blog and news in one app. Very easy to add a RSS feed.
Worms (3.99€)
Because every one need at least a game on his iPhone for boring time. The gameplay is very intuitive. You'll be able to play alone or with friends.
1. Slacker Radio- listen to internet radio wherever you have your phone. You can create a profile online and alter your preferences to play all the bands you like, listen to the hits or dredge up the deeper cuts. $FREE, www.slacker.com
2. Sirius/XM- The merger ruined a great XM lineup as far as I'm concerned, but at least they still have Opie & Anthony. I did away with my 3 radios and got an online subscription ($12.99/month, required for app) and now I just hook my phone to my home and car stereos. www.sirius.com
3. Tiger Woods PGA Tour: From EA sports. Not nearly as good as the PS3 version, but I can't take my PS3 to work. $4.99 from the app store.
4. ESPN Scorecenter: it sucks having to wait in front of the TV for the bottom line to scroll through all the Tennis and Nascar updates while your'e waiting to see the college football scores. Customize this app to get only the scores you care about. $FREE.
5. Guinness Pub Finder: Lost in unfamiliar territory? Thirsty? Use GPS to show your location and the surrounding pubs where you can get a pint of Guinness. $1.99 at the app store.
PageOnce Personal Assistant (Freemium)
Yahoo Fantasy Sports Manager (Free)
Zillow (Free)
Scrabble (Paid)
ESPN Radio (Paid)
That's leaving off ubiquitous stalwarts Google and Facebook.
Here are my type 5 apps and the ones I find most indispensable:
Facebook - Now that the app has been updated with a much improved user-interface, it's the best way for me to stay in touch with all my friends.
Zagat.com - Although it's a little pricey at $9.99, this comprehensive guide to restaurants, nightlife, hotels and shopping for almost every major city in the world provides unified user-generated ratings and descriptions to help you find the best places to go.
UpNext 3D NYC - If you live in NYC, this is a great app for finding anything and everything to do in terms of shopping, dining, nightlife and recreation (Manhattan only) but with a unique twist - it gives you a 3D view of every single building in Manhattan along with a list of the stores, bars, restaurants, etc. at that particular site. Amazing app for a relatively cheap $2.99.
Flight Control - This is an inventive and fun game that gets more challenging the longer you play and costs only $0.99.
Ace Tennis Online - If you're a tennis nut like I am, this game has pretty good graphics and allows you to play against people from all over the world. Although there are some quirks with the game that need to be fixed, it's still a lot of fun and challenging and is worth the $3.99 price.
Here's the 5 iPhone Apps that get most of my attention:
1--Pandora-- Anyone and everyone who downloads apps should pick this up. If you don't already know what it does, crawl out from that rock and check it out.. (semi)customizable streaming music playlists (using the Music Genome Project) for free.
2--Dictionary-- Surprise, it's a dictionary (and thesaurus)! This app will take forever to download, mostly because its chock full of information. All the features you would expect from a Dictionary app, including some you might not. You can hear audio clips of words being pronounced, and there's a word of a day. At a price point of absolutely nada, this is another easy pick.
3--Knights Onrush-- A fun 'defense' style game with loads of style and surprising amount of longevity. Flick cartoony looking warriors and catapults as they try to break into your castle. You can upgrade your castle with some potent weaponry to make things easier as you go. A long and challenging campaign mode, along with a few shorter term variants. Has to be one of the best games available in the app store for $0.99.
4--Chess with Friends-- This is a free little app that lets you set up a game of chess against any of your friends or random opponents. Somewhat like a correspondence game where you make a move and then send it off to your opponent waiting for him or her to make their move. Get a few games going and it quickly becomes a nice little distraction while killing time at work, or waiting for an elevator. Keeps recent games and has an in game chat feature which is cool, but for you chess nerds out there not being able to see/review/save the chess notation of each game leaves something to be desired.
5--Fandango-- Another free install that I don't know why anyone would skip. A very robust app with all the features you'd expect and some more sizzle that you might not. Movie show times, synopses, reviews, trailers, ticket ordering (if you have a fandango account) all at your fingertips. Uses your 'current location', and you can also set up favorite theaters for more ease of use.

In no particular order:
Tweetie: Does everything I want a Twitter app to do and it loads quick on 3G as well. Definitely get Tweetie 2 if you don't have this yet. It's worth the $2.99
I Dig It: for $0.99, you can't go wrong in this. Dig with your bulldozer to find treasures. Reach goals. There's a Lite version out there...try it to have a taste.
Chase: It's my bank. Free App.
Facebook: You have Facebook? You get app. Free.
Zenonia: If you love Zelda: A Link to The Past...GET THIS GAME NOW! Full on RPG for the iPhone with HOURS of gameplay. $2.99
Top Apps (all free):
Pandora: Pandora generates playlists for you on the fly based on what you're in the mood for - all for free. Use thumbs up/down to rate songs and refine the selections. Never buy another song again, and never deal with the hassle of making playlists.
Bloomberg - Best stock app. Get news, charts, and updated prices for your portfolio.
New York Times - All the news that's fit to print, on your phone.
Facebook - It's good, it works well, and it's free. Snap a photo on your iPhone and immediately upload it to your wall.
PhotoShop Mobile - Another free app, and easy to use (which i cannot say for full Photoshop). Very simple way to edit your pictures.
Tap Defense - addictive tower defense game. Lots of replay value. Does not get old.
Cribbage (Lite) - simple card game with smart AI and nice interface.
