I second Teotihuacan. With travel, it'll be a full day. But it's really one of the most interesting things I've ever seen. Also, check out the zocalo (3rd largest civic square, after Tienamen & Red Squares (Beijing & Moscow). Poke your head into the Metropolitan Cathedral on the square. Have lunch at Sanborne's House of Tiles "Casa de los Azulesjos". Go to that Sanborne's, not the 145 others in the city. Go have bad coffee on top of Sear's for the view. Have fun, and don't be overwhelmed. Oh, and the subway is awesome and almost free.

I would say not getting kidnapped is a must do! Have a cool trip.
Boring... Teotihuacan is, while historic, crowded with tourists and not much fun. The Zocalo is the same.
I would say go to Xochimilco and get drunk on a boat with some mariachis, visit Coyoacan, go out partying in La Condesa, go late nite to Garibaldi and drink with the locals in the square, visit Chapultepec, go to Polanco and have a nice expensive meal, check out the antique market La Lagunilla, see the view from atop the Angel, and ask the gringos you run into down there what they have enjoyed the most.
If there is a Bull fight, GO. You may never see it again. I don't generally go for blood sports, but this is a cultural / Heritage thing and thats what the visiting other places is about. The clubs blew me away, $20 us for open bar all night
and they had floor shows like small vegas acts. If it's still there Medusas on Rio San Angel No 89 Col San Angel was cool.
Teotihuacan was ok, I bought an overpriced(probably) mayan calendar type thing I still have. It's a long day on a bus and lots of tourists, but still touching something that old is rare.

Definetely Teotihuacan, is outside the city but It has some amazing pyramids. Chapultepec is also a great place right in the middle of the city is the equivalent to central park in Mexico city, with a castle on top. Also Museo de Antropologia really close to Chapultepec.
