I have trouble getting motivated. Cardio is probably the best thing for me, but I can't seem to stand running. I really need help getting motivated!
You don't necessarily have to run for cardio, there are lots of exercises you can do. Things like, elliptical machines, skipping, steppers and bikes all give you an excellent aerobic workout. And rather than doing one exercise for an extended period of time, make up a little circuit and do each exercise for 15-20 mins. This will make it seem much less tedious and it will also keep the body guessing, which is more effective for weightloss and overall fitness. Another approach would be to play sports that involve aerobic activity (soccer, basketball, tennis, squash). Sometimes a little friendly competition is all the motivation you need. If you can get through the first couple weeks using these tactics, the endorphin rush as well as how great you start to look/feel will be more than enough motivation to keep going.
i used to have the same problem, and my solution was finding things i like doing. try playing some pick up soccer, or ultimate frisbee, or go rock climbing. you just have to find some sort of exercise that is enjoyable to you

I can think of two approaches.
One is to set a goal. Do you want to run a certain distance or time in a race? Plan on losing a certain amount of weight? Want to stop feeling winded after going up a few flights of stairs? I can't set a goal for you, but think about what you specifically want out of an exercise/cardio program. Stick to it and amaze yourself.
The second just reinforces what others have mentioned: do an activity that's fun and interesting. Try something new just 'cause. You might like it. Someone mentioned squash; that's one of--if not the--best sports for burning calories, and it's pretty fun to boot.
Here's a little-known fact. Drummers have to have close to the same stamina as cyclists. They've been found to sustain heart rates up to 170 bpm for an hour or longer. Maybe the skins are for you. Run a YouTube search on Flo Mounier, and you'll see how that study makes sense. That dude's a beast.
I agree with the majority of the posts....with one exception:
"Things like, elliptical machines, skipping, steppers and bikes all give you an excellent aerobic workout"
If I ever see you "skipping" next to me while I am working out I may need to introduce the bridge of your nose to a 45lb plate.
Thank you and goodnight. Be sure to tip your waitress.
I've been doing P90x and I really like it... It's something different everyday, plus I really need that finish line to shoot for. I've had gym memberships and stuff, but could never maintain motivation for very long. Knowing that the program is only 90 days really helps me push to the finish. I might pick it back up after 90, but at least I can fool myself into thinking its temporary.
Anyway, it seems to help with my motivation.
Take Pictures of yourself in the most unflattering way possible. Get the double chin, get the love handles. Buy some tight muscle shirts that you think youd look good in. Take a pic in that. Take a pic naked if your comfortable enough. Then look at those pictures every time you dont feel like exercising. I went from a 38 inch waist down to a 34 doing just that.
I am really into gadgets so the best thing for me was buying a garmin forerunner GPS watch. It allows you to track where you have been, how fast, how far, you heart rate...Even better when you go online you can map yourself to google earth. You end up creating a diary of your adventures and you can track your progress really easily.
What do you enjoy? Do that.
I've come from 270lbs to 200lbs with various workouts and routines. I've tried weights, treadmills, cross training, group classes and recently discovered a few things -
Competition is motivational. Find someone close to your fitness levels, and compete. Email them smack talk during the day, then meet in the evenings to workout.
Goals are motivational. I signed up for a 1/2 marathon several weeks from now. Suddenly I found the motivation to run 10 miles.
There are more gadgets out there than I could possibly buy in a life time (I love gadgets). I run with the RunKeeper app on my iPhone, my Nike Vapor headphones (don't like em), my Polar F11 heart rate monitor and all kinds of technical t shirts, shorts and various other clothes in my wardrobe. Shopping for gadgets is fun.
You should do high-intensity interval training on aerobic machines like ellipticals, bikes, or the treadmill. What this means is that you do a moderate, brisk pace for about 3-4 minutes, and then for one minute you go all out. You repeat this about four or five times for a 20-25 minute aerobic workout. You'll get better results and spend less time doing cardio. Treadmills will give you the best results, bikes the least. That's because it takes more effort to run than to bike.
That's a no-brainer and also one that has only one correct answer: find an activity you really enjoy! If you don't enjoy the activity you won't stick with it. It really doesn't matter if it's running, cycling, weights, swimming, etc. You can get in killer shape from just about anything but only if you really love doing it. Look at Lance Armstrong (cyclist), Dean Karnazes (runner), Laird Hamilton (surfer), and Michael Phelps (swimmer). All are in very different sports that use very different muscles and yet all are in phenomenal shape because they absolutely love what they do. Just go and try as many different activities as possible until you find the one you love.
