There's a really awesome site called Sportsvite (http://sportsvite.com) where you can find activity or workout partners. It's basically a social network for athletes, so if you live near a big city they have a pretty lively user base. You can see who's the most active too, so it's better than placing a random Craigslist ad.
I would find a good friend that has similar goals workout wise. If you're going with a friend then the gym starts to become something you look forward to as opposed to dreading it. Many websites offer training routines that you and your friend could both set out to conquer. As you both become more into the workout you will begin to compete with each other and pushing each other to work harder. There isn't a downside to going with a friend, and a friend is better than a stranger any day.
Find a buddy who's around the same size as you and has similar physical fitness goals. Coordinate schedules and go get your LL Cool J on.
Find someone who you consider physically attractive to workout with... It'll keep you motivated to impress, and the eye-candy is a bonus.
There's a few pros/cons here.
Pros:
- You get someone to spot you for those last few (most important) reps.
- You get someone to chat with while doing cardio, or any other exercise that's boring to you.
- If you're attracted to the person it helps you push more (to impress).
Cons:
- If you aren't lifting at the same level it can be a pain to keep re-racking weights.
- Too much time between sets kills your heart rate and isn't as effective.
- You may end up chatting and wasting more time at the gym than you need.
- You begin to rely on another person for your workout, which means when they are feeling lazy it can put a damper on your workout.
I've tried to work out with multiple partners and found that I can only be truly consistent with it when I rely on myself.
A personal trainer would do you much more good than a friend to work out with.
good luck
